The Ice Swim in Morocco is a competition open to everyone: beginners can try short distances safely like 50m, and more experienced cold-water swimmers can start at 500m or 1000m.
Here are Hassan Baraka’s recommendations for better preparation for cold-water swimming:
- Breathe slowly and calmly. Keep your head above water until you are comfortable putting your face in. If you start to feel warm in cold water, you are experiencing the first dangerous stage of hypothermia, so get out immediately.
- Regularly immerse yourself in water; daily short immersions prepare your body to handle the “cold water shock” and recover.
- Do not try to be a hero in cold water, know your limits, and exit as soon as your body slows down or your hands start to stiffen.
- •When exiting the water, put on a cap and dress immediately. Your body temperature will continue to drop for a few minutes after leaving the water, so don’t delay! Prepare all your post-swim clothes and equipment before entering the water.

The competition takes place at Aguelmam Azegza Lake, approximately 50 minutes from the city of Khénifra.
To participate in an Ice Swimming competition and according to the International Ice Swimming Association (IISA) rules, you may wear:
•A standard approved swimsuit: for men, it cannot go below the knees; for women, it cannot be wider than the shoulders or above the neckline. (Exceptionally for the Ice Swim in Morocco, women may swim covered, but it cannot be a neoprene suit, and the fabric must not provide heat).
- A pair of standard approved goggles.
- A standard silicone or latex swim cap (provided with your number).
- Grease is allowed only for friction purposes.
- Safety belts, earplugs, nose clips, and mouthguards are allowed for safety purposes only.
- Any other accessory, including but not limited to music players and warming bags, is not allowed.
After your swim, you should adopt certain reflexes to warm up quickly and avoid hypothermia. Go directly to a heated tent or near a heat source to restore your body temperature.
We recommend having the following ready:
- Warm spare clothes (top and bottom).
- A warm hat.
- Warm socks.
- Warm gloves.
- A thermos.
Drink a hot liquid, such as tea or hot water from your thermos, to accelerate your body’s warming process.
To participate in the event, you must complete the official IISA medical certificate, signed and stamped by a doctor.
